Farmers organisations meet sugar commissioner; seek againts sugar mills

Kolhapur: Sugarcane farmers organisation have met Maharashtra sugar commissioner Sourabh Rao at his office in Pune and raised the issues cane growers are facing. They alleged that few sugar mills from Kolhapur and Sangli districts are compelling farmers to sign agreements stating that they will accept the cane bills in installments and won’t complain about interest on pending FRP due to delay in clearing dues.

As per the complaint lodged by the organisations Baliraja, Ankush and Shivrai, they stated the millers are following illegal practice to find a way out from government action against them. The department should act on this.

Assuring them Rao said, action will be taken against those who are paying cane bills in installments. As per the Sugarcane Control Order, they will have to pay 15 per cent interest on FRP if payments delayed by 14 days.

The law mandates payment of the FRP to the growers within 14 days of delivery of cane and 15 per cent interest on it if they fail to adhere to the timeline.
