Farmers raise concern over delays in weighing cane at the sugar mill

Sivaganga: At the monthly farmers’ grievances redress meeting held on Friday, sugarcane growers expressed dissatisfaction over the prolonged delay in weighing sugarcane at Sakti Sugar Mills, according to thehindu.

District Collector Asha Ajith, presiding over the meeting in Sivaganga, assured farmers that measures would be implemented to address such delays in the future.

During the meeting, one of the farmers raised concerns about extensive queues causing prolonged waiting periods, leading to excessive weight loss for the produce. Agriculture department officials, however, contested the farmer’s claim, stating that they had consulted with the Mill authorities and found no undue delay. Nevertheless, they pledged to make alternative arrangements to reduce waiting times for sugarcane-laden trucks and tractors.

To tackle the issue, the Collector announced that discussions with Mill authorities would be initiated to explore the possibility of weighing sugarcane-laden trucks in nearby locations, with farmers actively participating in the deliberations.
