Farmers receive Rs 5.77 crore as compensation over crops loss

Madurai: The government has started disbursement of crop loss relief in the district and at the initial phase, around 5,798 farmers whose crops grown on 5,607.72 hectares were damaged have received Rs 5.77 crore as compensation. These farmers’ crops were damaged in the recent unseasonal rains.

District Collector V. Vishnu while addressing the farmers’ grievances redressal meet said, “Farmers had cultivated paddy on 38,427 hectares, minor millets on 602 hectares, grams on 7,494 hectares, cotton on 663 hectares, sugarcane on 33 hectares and oilseeds on 474 hectares. Precisely, cultivation had been taken up on 47,513 hectares, thanks to the surplus rainfall.”

Based on the report prepared by the inspection teams, the government has disbursed Rs 5.77 crore to the 5,798 farmers. The amount has been deposited in their bank accounts.
