Fiji Labour Party opposes sugar price hike suggestion

The Fiji Labour party has strongly opposed the suggestions of the Fiji Sugar Corporation to hike sugar prices.

Mahendra Chaudhry, FLP leader, has issued a statement stating that the FSC has urged the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission to almost double the prices of sugar. This is not the time to increase the prices and the party is strongly against it, he said.

Chaudhry said, “This will adversely impact the consumers. An increase in prices will hit the pockets of poor people that are already reeling from a financial crisis due to the covid-19 pandemic.”

“Hike in sugar prices will lead to an increase in the prices of products that use sugar like biscuits, sweets, soft drinks and canned foods. People won’t accept this hike,” he concluded.
