Global sugar market heading to small surplus in 2024-25 season: Datagro

After a deficit in season 2023-24, the global sugar market is expected to have a small surplus in the season 2024-25.

According to Datagro, a consultancy, the global sugar market is expected to have a slight surplus of 1.62 million metric tons in the 2024-25 season, following a deficit of 1.79 million tons in the 2023-24 season. This surplus is attributed to the recovery of production in Thailand.

Datagro predicts that Thailand’s sugar production for the 2024-25 season will reach 10.5 million tons, compared to 8.77 million tons in the previous season, thanks to an increase in the planted area for sugarcane. However, the consultancy anticipates a 1.9% decrease in Brazil’s Centre-South (CS) production, down to 41.6 million tons, due to unusually dry weather conditions.
