Goa: Government to lay off sugar mill employees through VRs

Ponda: Goa government has taken steps to relieve workers associated with the Sanjivani Sugar mill through a voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) as it has become difficult for the govt to provide financial assistance, reports The Times of India.

Acting on the advice of the finance department, the agriculture department has asked the management of the sugar mill to lay off all the staff immediately through VRS.

There are a total of 177 employees in the factory including 99 regular and 78 working on a contract basis.

The factory stopped operations in 2019 and it does not have any other operations; the government is providing financial assistance to the mill for the last three years. Now the finance department has rejected the proposal to extend assistance for two more years.

The factory would soon be metamorphosed as an ethanol producing unit through a public-private partnership (PPP).
