Good news for farmers: Punjab hikes sugarcane price

The much-awaited demand of the sugarcane farmers of hiking State Agreed Price (SAP) for sugarcane has been accepted by the state government. The government has increased the SAP for sugarcane by Rs 15 per quintal for the crushing season 2021-22.

The government has released an official statement regarding the new rates of the sugarcane crop. The early variety of sugarcane will now cost Rs 325 per quintal as against earlier Rs 310 per quintal while the mid-variety cane price will increase from Rs 300 to Rs 315 per quintal. The late maturing variety’s price will be increased from Rs 295 to Rs 310 per quintal.

According to the estimates of the state government, around 660 lakh quintals of sugarcane would be crushed in the state during the 2021-22 crushing season. The area under cane cultivation in the state is around 1.10 lakh hectares.
