Government not increased sugarcane price due to pressure from sugar mill owners: Bhartiya Kisan Union

Muzaffarnagar: After the Uttar Pradesh government announced no change in sugarcane SAP (State Advisory Price), cane growers expressed displeasure over it. Opposition parties launched an attack on the government over no hike in sugarcane price.

Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) has threatened to launch an agitation against the sugarcane prices declared by the UP government.

BKU national president Naresh Tikait said,”The prices announced by the government is anti-farmer and will benefit sugar mills only”.

In a circular issued by the cane development department, the state government announced SAP of sugarcane at Rs 315 per quintal (for normal variety of sugarcane). Likewise, SAP for low and high grades cane price are at Rs 305 and Rs 325 per quintal, respectively.

Sugarcane growers in Uttar Pradesh claim that the cost of sugarcane production is increased; therefore, there is a need to hike cane price. They had demanded to fix the sugarcane price at Rs 400 per quintal.

“The state government has not increased the sugarcane price due to pressure from the mill owners. We will convene a panchayat of farmers to discuss the issue and will decide further course of the action”, Tikait further added.
