Government takes steps to revive Alanganallur Sugar Mill

Madurai: Taking a step forward to revive the National Cooperative Sugar Mill at Alanganallur in Madurai district, Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare M.R.K. Panneerselvam stated that a special committee of experts has been formed to study the revival of the sugar mill, reports The Hindu.

The sugar mill requires around 2,500 tonnes of sugarcane every day to operate efficiently. The mill was closed in 2019 due to a shortage of sugarcane and we have instructed the officials to inspect the plant thoroughly and submit a report, he said.

The government will take all the necessary steps to resume operations after we get the report. It is necessary to increase sugarcane production in the region to ensure that the sugar mill operates fullly to its capacity, said the minister.

The government had taken several steps in 2006 to resume operations at the mill when the mill it faced similar problems in 2003-2005, said Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration P. Moorthy.
