Gujarat: Sugarcane output to increase by 12% in 2021

Ahmedabad: Sugarcane output in Gujarat is estimated to increase to 1.21 crore tonnes in 2020-21 crushing season from 1.07 crore tonnes in 2019-20 season. This is an increase of 12% when compared with last year’s output.

As per the data released by the Union ministry of agriculture and farmers welfare, the increase in area under cultivation is the main reason for the increase in sugarcane output. The area under cane cultivation for this season is around 1.74 lakh hectares as against 1.50 lakh hectares last year.

Though there is an increase in sugarcane production, there is not much increase in the sugar output due to the lower cane recovery this year.
According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), sugar mills in Gujarat have produced 6.55 lakh tonnes of sugar this season till February 15 as against 5.95 lakh tonnes during the same period last season. Total 15 sugar mills are operating in the cooperative sector in Gujarat.
