Indonesia: PTPN to expand sugarcane cultivation to meet domestic demand

Jakarta: Indonesian state-owned plantation company PT Perkebunan Nusantara III (PTPN III) plans to increase the area under sugarcane cultivation to meet domestic demand.

PT Perkebunan Nusantara III (PTPN III) CEO Mohammad Abdul Ghani told Parliament that to meet domestic white sugar demand, the company will add 60,000 to 70,000 hectares to its sugar plantation.

He said, “The company will use the state-owned forestry firm Perhutani’s area for cultivation. We’ll finalise with Perhutani about the organisation at the end of this year.”

According to the Agricultural Ministry, sugar production in Indonesia is likely to reach 540,000 during the June-August period.
