Iran produces 2.5 million tonnes of sugar in season 2020-21

Iran has produced 2.5 million tonnes of refined sugar during the last Iranian year (March 2020-21), which is sufficient to meet the domestic demand, said the director-general of the Non-Metal Industries Affairs Bureau with the Ministry of Industries, Mining and Trade.

According to the news report, Mohsen Safdari said, “The raw material for the production of 1 million tonnes was imported and for the production of the remaining 1.5 million tonnes, local sugarcane and sugarbeets were used.”

Safdari stated that 49 sugar mills are presently operating in Iran and they have a nominal capacity of refining 5.3 million tons of sugar per year.
