Kenya: Government approves Sh1.7 billion to support sugar industry

In a bid to revitalize the struggling sugar sector, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has announced a Sh1.7 billion boost, stating that Members of Parliament have approved the amount through a supplementary budget to support the industry. Wetang’ula stated that this move would reinforce President William Ruto’s commitment to breathe life into the ailing sector, reported Nation.africa.

Out of the Sh1.7 billion, Wetang’ula highlighted that at least Sh300 million would be utilized immediately. Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi is expected to visit the factory to officially hand over the funds. Of the Sh300 million, Sh250 million will be allocated to settle debts owed to farmers, while the remaining Sh50 million will be directed towards paying outstanding workers’ salaries.

During the announcement at the funeral service of Antony Maloba in Mukhweya village, Kabuchai constituency, Bungoma County, Wetang’ula criticized certain leaders, including former cabinet secretary Eugene Wamalwa and former Kanduyi MP Wafula Wamunyinyi, accusing them of exploiting the mill’s challenges for their political gain.

Wetang’ula expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the Nzoia Sugar Factory’s recovery, stating that it has resumed milling activities, and farmers will be paid their dues two weeks after delivering the cane. He urged farmers to take advantage of the government’s revival plans to support the factory and boost cane cultivation.

Additionally, Wetang’ula announced plans for a meeting between Bungoma leaders and President Ruto later in the week to discuss the status of projects promised during the President’s visit to the county. He assured that the National Assembly is committed to supporting the revival of the country’s ailing sugar factories, emphasizing the government’s determination to rescue farmers affected by the collapse of these facilities. Wetang’ula assured that the funds allocated for the revival would be diligently utilized for their intended purpose.
