Kenya: High Court halts government’s plan to lease out cash-strapped state-owned sugar mills

Hearing of the petition filed by the five farmers and 45 others from the Nandi Country Sugarcane, the High Court has halted the leasing process of cash-strapped sugar mills.

Justice SM Githinji has ordered a temporary halt to the leasing out process. The farmers are opposing the privatization of the sugar mills.
The order issued by the Eldoret High Court Deputy Registrar reads that “Pending the hearing and determination of the application inter parties, the respondent should not lease the three state-owned sugar mills namely Chemelil Sugar Company Ltd, Muhoroni Sugar Company and Miwani Sugar Company Ltd as alluded to in the gazette notice No.5473 of 2020 and gazette notice number of 6437 of 2020.”

The other two mills that the government plans to lease out are Nzoia and Sony Sugar companies.
