Kolhapur: Kolhapur district collector Daulat Desai has called a meeting of sugar millers and cane growers representatives in Kolhapur on Monday to resolve the deadlock between farmers and millers regarding the sugarcane purchase price. Also, the main agenda of the meeting is the smooth cane crushing season.
Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS) has been demanding payment of the fair and remunerative price (FRP) in one instalment.
All the farmers’ organisations, including SSS, have warned sugar mills not to start crushing season till they declare the cane purchase rate.
The SSS will declare cane purchase rate in its conference today at Jaysingpur in Kolhapur district.
Recently, sugarcane farmers’ agitation for cane price had turned violent as they have started setting fire to the tractors carrying a cane to the mills for crushing and also punctured the tyres of it. The heat of the agitation was felt at Shirol and Hatkanangle talukas of Kolhapur district.
