Maharashtra expects to remain top sugar producer state in India

Pune: Maharashtra is eyeing top spot in sugar production again this season. In the previous season, it has surpassed Uttar Pradesh and became top sugar producing state in the country.

According to the news report published in Hindustan Times, Maharashtra Sugar Commissioner Shekhar Gaikwad said, “The area under cane cultivation this year is the same as last year. We expect to remain top in India with record sugar production like previous year.”

Sugarcane crushing season in the state began on October 15.

“Area under cane cultivation in 2021-22 was 1.488 million hectares and 200 mills were operating during that period. This season, the area under cane cultivation is around 1.487 million hectares and 203 mills are ready to participate in the crushing operations. Last year mills had produced 137.36 lakh tonnes and this year we are expecting sugar output of 138 lakh metric tonnes,” he further added.
