Mexico’s sugar production below expectation

The sugar output in Mexico has been reported at 5.6 million tonnes so far in the 2020/21 season (October-September), informed Czarnikow, the food trader and supply chain services provider. The volume is lower by 500,000 tonnes below the earlier estimates, it said.

In a report released on Tuesday Czarnikow said that the drought in 2019/20 has impacted the cane supply this year.

Mexico is one of the major sugar exporters to the United States. The country will be able to export little sugar this year due to lower output.

Mexico is likely to focus on domestic markets instead of exporting sugar due to low production, it said.

Sugar production in Mexico for the season 2020/21 is expected at 5.7 million tonnes which is below the average sugar output of 6 million tonnes. Czarnikow sees total Mexican sugar exports in 2020/21 at 1.15 million tonnes, the smallest volume since at least 2014.
