Minister asks for special funds to strengthen and renovate sugar mills in Punjab

New Delhi: With the aim of to uplift sugarcane farmers, the Punjab government will be strengthening the sugarcane cultivation in the state. Punjab’s Cooperation Minister Sukhjinder Randhawa met the Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar and discussed the same issue with him.

He has asked for special funds by the National Cooperative Development Corp (NCDC) to strengthen and renovate sugar mills in the state. The mills at Gurdaspur, Batala and Jalandhar will be upgraded as there is a tremendous potential of sugarcane cultivation in Doab region, he said.

Cane growers in Punjab warned of agitation in front of Buttar Sugar Mill on December 1 if sugarcane arrears are not paid before the deadline. Also, they are demanding to hike the State advised price (SAP) of sugarcane for a new season. They claim rate what they get for sugarcane is not sufficient.
