Minister asks sugar mills to take care of cane harvesters

Kolhapur: As many as 2.75 lakh cane harvesters from Beed and Ahmednagar district are stuck up in Western Maharashtra due to lockdown. Minister Dhananjay Munde has asked the sugar mills that are continuing cane crushing amid Coronavirus pandemic to ensure the safety of the cane harvesters. As the cane crushing season is nearing an end, the number of cane harvesters are returning to their native Beed and Ahmednagar district. However, some are stuck up in western Maharashtra due to lockdown. He has urged the deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar to intervene in the matter.

“I have raised the issue with minister Ajit Pawar about their safety. We have instructed the sugar mills to take care of ration, health and other facilities of these labourers,” he said.

Similarly, Chhattisgarh Agriculture Minister Ravindra Choubey on Friday said Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has directed officials saying that no farmer should face any trouble even when they return with empty vehicles amid nationwide lockdown
