Fiji: Ministry of Sugar to announce relief package for sugarcane farmers

The Ministry of Sugar will announce a relief package for the sugarcane farmers, whose farms have suffered damages during TC Yasa, said Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

The package will help the sugarcane farmers to recover from their losses and harvest cane for next year’s crushing season.

According to the media report, Yogesh Karan, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Sugar said that the government is working on a structure to assist the sugarcane farmers. He met the stakeholders of the sugar industry two days ago.

Graham Clark, CEO, Fiji Sugar Corporation said that they are considering the losses of 3,360 farms.

The sugarcane farmers from Seaqaqa have urged the government for special cane payment as they are financially affected and need funds to cater to their daily needs. The farmers have told the Minister of Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum that they need money as the sugarcane cultivation is their only way to earn money and they are trying their best to increase the quality of the cane.
