Moradabad sugar mills owe Rs 800 crore to sugarcane farmers

Moradabad: Despite the warning issued by chief minister Yogi Adityanath, 22 mills from Moradabad division are yet to clear sugarcane arrears around Rs 800 crore. Sugarcane farmers in Uttar Pradesh have intensified their protest over pending cane dues, but in spite of that mills failed to pay the dues.

Chandpur mill from Bijnaur district has paid only 50 per cent arrears which is lowest in the region. Sugarcane farmers are worried as their past dues have not been cleared yet, and the new season is about to commence from the week of November.

UP government tried to pressurize the millers to pay cane arrears but could not succeed in it. By warning of stern action, Yogi Adityanath set August 31 deadline for sugar mills to clear the dues, but even that was flouted by the mill citing financial scarcity.

Now farmers are hoping that they will get their arrears soon as Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to clear the cane dues with 15 per cent interest on it within a month.
