Nepal faces sugar shortage as festival season nears

Kathmandu: As the festival season is nearing, consumers in Nepal are facing scarcity of sugar, which is one of the essential ingredients to prepare sweets during the festival season.

Kapil Muni Mainali, president of the Nepal Sugarcane Producers’ Association told to media that following the sugar shortage, the millers and the government have illegally imported sugar to sell at a high rate during the festival season.

Sugar prices have surged in Nepal. The prices of sugar in the retail market have shot up to Rs 100 per kg from earlier Rs 85 per kg. The annual demand of the sugar in the country is around 250,000 tonnes and the maximum sugar is consumed during three months of the year starting from July when the festival season starts.
