Nepal government under pressure to clear pending cane dues

Kathmandu: Reeling under the pressure of the agitating sugarcane farmers, the Nepal government has initiated the process to clear the pending cane dues of the sugarcane farmers.

Lekhraj Bhatta, Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies invited the sugar millers on Monday and asked them to provide the details of the payments they have made to the cane farmers.

According to the local media reports, the ministry has asked the millers to provide the identity of the farmers to whom they have paid the cane dues so far.

The government has taken steps after the sugarcane farmers launched agitation at Maitighar in Kathmandu. As farmers’ agitation was getting support, the government rushed to address their issues.

Farmers are yet to receive arrears around Rs 481 million from four sugar mills identified as Shree Ram Sugar Mill, Indira Sugar Mill, Lumbini Sugar mill and Annapurna Sugar Mill.
