Nepal: Sugar mill fails to clear cane dues

Sarlahi: The sugarcane farmers from Sarlahi district are still awaiting for the cane arrears around Rs 240 million. According to the farmers, the Annapurna Sugar Mill at Dhankaul in the district owes them this huge amount.

The sugarcane farmers had launched agitations and came on streets of Kathmandu last December demanding clearing of pending cane arrears.

According to the media report in Nepal, as per the agreement signed at that time, the mills agreed to clear cane dues before January 10. However, Annapurna Sugar mill has not cleared the cane dues.

Sugarcane farmers from Dhankaul said that they are still waiting for cane dues from the sugar mill. They held the government responsible for delay in the cane payments as it is not taking any strict action against the mills.

Kapilmuni Neupane, chairperson, Nepal Federation of Sugarcane Producers said, “The farmers are yet to get their dues from the last three to four years which has affected their financial situation.”
