Nepal: Sugar mills owe Rs 500 million to cane growers

Kathmandu, Nepal: Sugarcane farmers claim that despite the commitment to clear cane dues after selling sugar, the sugar mills failed to fulfil its promise. According to the media report, sugar mills are yet to clear dues worth more than Rs 500 million.

According to the sugarcane farmers, sugar mills are delaying the payments citing lockdown as a reason and shortage of finance. Sugarcane Farmers’ Action Committee secretary Hari Shyam Raya said, “We will launch an agitation if the sugar mills fail the clear our dues. We had launched agitation earlier in January but called off after we were assured of clearing dues.”
