Nepal sugar producers propose three-tier pricing system for sugarcane

Kathmandu, Nepal: As the government is preparing to announce the minimum support price for sugarcane for this harvest season starting November, the sugar producers from Nepal have come up with a proposal of three-tier pricing system for sugarcane.

The sugar producers proposed the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development the structure with Rs 546 per quintal for high-quality cane, Rs 536 for medium quality and Rs 526 for low-quality. They claim that the system will encourage the sugarcane farmers.

According to the media report, Shashi Kant Agrawal, president, Sugar Producers Association said, “This system will motivate farmers to produce high-quality sugarcane. It will benefit them as well as increase sugar output.”

Kapil Muni Mainali, president of Federation of Sugarcane Producers Association said, “The sugar producers have not consulted them regarding the pricing system. The sugarcane producers won’t oppose this if they are benefitted from this.”
