NSI to organize conference on theme “Sugar & Health- Myth & Realities”

National Sugar Institute, Kanpur to organize a Conference & Expo “MEETHA-2022” on 11th January 2022 on the theme “Sugar & Health- Myth & Realities”. The event is jointly being organized by National Sugar Institute, Kanpur and Indian Sugar Mills Association, New Delhi. The conference is being organized on hybrid mode and shall be inaugurated by Shri Sudhanshu Pandey, Secretary (Food & Public Distribution), Government of India. Shri Subodh Kumar Singh, Joint Secretary (Sugar & Administration) shall also address the conference.

Due to recent marketing and advertisement strategy highlighting artificial sweeteners have intensified anti-sugar movement many a times distorting the facts and through misinformation. It is an alarming situation when people substituting sugar under the mistaken belief that adopting artificial sweetener will be a better option and sugar will cause health ill effects. Whereas, the matter of fact remains that sugar as carbohydrate is an essential ingredient of balance diet and may not be blamed for all advertised ill health effects. Many ill effects on human health are due to change in life style and balance between calorie consumed and calorie spent, said Prof. Narendra Mohan, Director, National Sugar Institute.

To bring forth the factual position, enlighten the common people and also to showcase importance of sugar in balanced diet, the conference is being organized. The conference is proposed to be addressed by Ms. Annie Denny, Director-General, World Sugar Research Organization, Shri Arvind Chudasama, Editor, International Sugar Journal, Shri Ahmed Vawda, Consultant, American Sugar Refining Co., Canada, Prof. Narendra Mohan, Director, National Sugar Institute and other eminent experts including Nutritionist and a Diabetologist.

In the Expo various speciality sugars, jaggery and jaggery based confectionary & bakery products shall be displayed. Information about production of jaggery and jaggery products shall also be provided. These items shall be available for sale at concessional prices. The visitors shall also get a taste of jaggery tea, flavoured fresh cane juice and other recipes made of cane juice.
