Odisha: Farmers in Kalahandi and Koraput districts suffer crop damage due to heavy downpours and hailstorms

Bhawanipatna/Jeypore: Unexpected heavy rainfall and hailstorms late on Friday night in several areas of Kalahandi and Koraput districts have reportedly caused damage to standing crops, just as multiple districts prepare for kharif paddy procurement, reported The New Indian Express.

In Kalahandi, where paddy procurement is scheduled to commence on November 29, the situation is particularly dire in Uthla, Chahaka, and Badchergaon areas, where crops like paddy, cotton, and sugarcane have been extensively damaged. This devastation has left farmers reeling, with the added impact of electric poles and trees being uprooted, disrupting both power supply and road connectivity in some areas.

Kalahandi’s collector, P Anvesha Reddy, announced during a strategy meeting on Saturday that kharif paddy procurement in the district will officially start on November 29. The procurement will begin in Koksara, Narla, M Rampur, and Karlamunda blocks of the district on November 29, while Bhawanipatna, Kesinga, Dharamgarh, Junagarh, Golamunda, and Kalampur blocks will commence procurement on December 1. The Lanjigarh block will follow suit on December 5.
