Phagwara: Farmers’ agitation for pending cane dues enters day 15

Phagwara: The agitation of sugarcane farmers under the banner of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Doaba) demanding payment of pending cane dues entered its 15th day on Monday, reports The Tribune.

The farmers have threatened to intensify their agitation if the government and the local sugar mill fail to take steps to clear pending cane dues of Rs 72 crore.

Satnam Singh Sahni, BKU (Doaba) leader, said, the government had assured to clear the cane dues of Rs 23 crore after selling the property of the defaulting sugar mill.

“We are planning to organise a meeting of the various farmers’ organisations on August 25 to discuss the future course of our action,” he further added.
