Philippines: Mills to start operations early to address shortage of sugar

Iloilo: To address the shortage of sugar, the mills in Panaya Island have been asked to start operations early in the next crushing season.

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) approved the request filed by Iloilo 3rd District Board Member Matt Palabrica. Three sugar mills are operating on Panay Island.

According to Palabrica, The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) has anticipated a sugar shortage before the opening of the milling season for the next season.

The importation of sugar would go against the sugarcane farmers from Filipino, stressed Palabrica.

This would lead to a lower income for farmers as sugar imports would lower the prices of the commodity in the domestic market, he stated.
