Punjab: Cooperative sugar mills clear cane dues of Rs 45 crore

Chandigarh: Following the instructions of Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, the cooperative sugar mills on Tuesday released the pending cane dues amounting to Rs 45 crore for the crushing season 2020-21.

Cooperative Minister S. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said that the amount will be credited to the bank accounts of the cane growers with immediate effect. The state government has taken this step despite the fact that the Union government has withheld the export subsidy and buffer stock subsidy worth Rs 11.57 crore due to the sugar mills for the year 2019-20, he said.

We have approached the Union Government to clear the subsidy amount of the sugar mills, he said.

Our government is taking several steps to increase the income of the sugarcane growers and as a part of it, we have developed as many as 16 lakh saplings of the high yielding varieties of cane with the help of Punjab Agricultural Ludhiana and Karnal centre of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. These saplings will be provided to the cane farmers, he said.
