Chandigarh: Cooperative sugar mills owe cane dues worth Rs 313 crore and the private sugar mills owe dues worth Rs 257 crore to the sugarcane farmers, informed the Punjab cooperation minister Harpal Singh Cheema to the state assembly on Saturday, reports The Times of Inida.

The state government is making efforts to ensure that the farmers get their cane dues in time; he assured the house during question hour. The properties of the private sugar mills will be attached if these mills fail to pay arrears, said Cheema.

Accusing that the earlier government was protecting private sugar mills, Cheema said that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government is taking follow-up to recover the pending cane dues from a private sugar mill at Phagwara.

The private sugar mill in chief minister Bhagwant Mann’s assembly constituency Dhuri owes crores of outstanding payment, said the leader of the opposition Pratap Singh Bajwa.
