Punjab government releases Rs 50 crore to cooperative sugar mills for clearing cane dues

Chandigarh:Helping the sugarcane farmers amid lockdown the Punjab government has released Rs 50 crore to the cooperative sugar mills to clear pending arrears of cane growers.

Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh took the decision after the farmers were reeling under distress following lockdown due to Coronavirus pandemic.

Cooperation Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said, “The funds had been immediately released to Sugarfed, which further transferred it to the sugar mills to clear the outstanding dues of the farmers.”

This will provide relief to sugarcane farmers. Coronavirus has put sugar industry in crisis as there is no demand for sugar in the domestic market due to closure of malls, hotels and other food outlets. Mills are also facing financial scarcity due to which they are unable to clear cane dues.
