Punjab: Sugarcane farmers gheraos sugar mill in Phagwara; SDM assures cane payment

Phagwara, Punjab: Like Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra, sugarcane farmers in Punjab too are stressed over pending sugarcane dues. Demanding payment of dues around Rs 69 crore, cane growers gheraoed a sugar mill in Phagwara.

The agitators under the leadership of Union Doaba president Manjit Singh Rai staged a demonstration against mill administration. It continued for over four hours. Police were deployed on spot to maintain law and order.

According to the reports, the situation went out of hand when someone disconnected the loudspeaker being used by the protesters, who forcibly entered the sugar mill following a scuffle with the police.

Phagwara SDM Gurwinder Singh Johal requested cane growers to stop the agitation and their demands would be accepted. He assured the sugarcane farmers that they would get payments regularly. Following the assurance from him, the farmers called off agitation.
