Scared of government’s action UP mills pay 450 crore rupees in 4 days

The millers from Uttar Pradesh have paid cane arrears around Rs 450 crore to farmers in 4 days after the state government warned action against the defaulter sugar mills.

Sanjay R Bhoosreddy, commissioner, sugar and cane said, “The millers acted on our warning and have paid the amount in 4 days. Equal amount is expected to be disbursed within the next four days. Around 20 mills will be paying Rs 500 crore to the farmers and the management of these mills have assured the government about the 100 per cent payment to farmers.”

Recently, the Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to clear the cane dues with 15 per cent interest on it within a month. The court issued the order after hearing a petition filed by farmers from Uttar Pradesh.

Sugar mills so far have paid 27,460 crore rupees against the total sugarcane arrears of 33,048 crore rupees in sugar season 2018-19. Earlier, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath set August 31 deadline for sugar mills to clear cane dues. But in spite of that mills failed to pay the arrears citing financial scarcity.
