Season 2023-24: Gujarat registers slight increase in sugar production

In a notable contrast to the declining trend in sugar production across the country, Gujarat has recorded a slight increase in its sugar production.

As per the data provided by the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Limited (NFCSF), until December 31, 2023, 15 sugar mills in Gujarat have commenced crushing operations, processing 43.33 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, resulting in a production of 3.90 lakh tonnes of sugar for the ongoing season 2023-24. Comparatively, during the same period in the previous season (2022-23), 16 mills in Gujarat had processed 40.86 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, yielding 3.80 lakh tons of sugar.

Furthermore, neighbouring state Madhya Pradesh has seen 18 sugar mills in operation, processing 11.83 lakh tonnes of sugarcane and producing 1.00 lakh tonnes of sugar by the end of December 2023 for the ongoing season. In the previous season, these mills had processed 13.86 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, resulting in 1.15 lakh tonnes of sugar production by the same period.

According to NFCSF statistics, as of December 31, 2023, nationwide, 511 sugar mills have initiated crushing operations for the 2023-24 season, processing 1222.64 lakh tonnes of sugarcane and producing 112.10 lakh tonnes of sugar.

This boost in sugar production in Gujarat highlights the state’s resilience in the face of the overall national decline, contributing positively to the sugar industry’s landscape.
