South Africa: Around 100,000 tonnes of sugarcane crops destroyed in fire

South Africa: More than 2,000 hectares of sugarcane plantation on the 15 farms were destroyed in a massive fire in the mid-Illovo area on September 13, according to the media reports.

Ant Foster, chair of the Mill Group Board of Eston, said, “The biggest loss was of the sugarcane crops grown by the farmers as more than 100,000 tonnes of sugarcane was burnt in the fire.” The farmers are rushing to the mills for crushing the available cane but the mills are not able to cope with the farmers at a time.

The reason for the massive fire is not known but most of the people believe that the high temperature, heavy winds and dry conditions led to the fire.
