State government approves Rs 150 crore as incentive for sugarcane farmers

For the current year’s crushing season (October 2018-September 2019), the Tamil Nadu government has approved Rs 150 crore towards the payment of transitional production incentive to sugarcane farmers.

According to the order issued by the State Agriculture Department on Wednesday, the amount would be paid through direct benefit transfer system.

For the crushing session of 2017-18,  around 1.15 lakh sugarcane farmers belonging to cooperative, public and private sector sugar mills received Rs. 103.76 crores till December 31 last year.

According to the Central Government norms, the fair and remunerative price (FRP)  for the cane was fixed at Rs. 2,612.5 per tonne for sugar mills having a recovery of 9.5% or less, the rate applicable to Tamil Nadu, given its recovery rate of less than 9.5%.

The difference between FRP (Rs 2,612.5) and the State Advised price (Rs 2,750) is Rs 137.5 per tonne, which was being paid by the state government in the form of transitional production incentive to sugarcane farmers.
