State government extends scheme for providing grant-in-aid to Sanjivani sugar mill

Ponda: The state government has extended the scheme for assisting the Sanjivani Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana Ltd (SSSKL) for six months or till the employees of the mill take voluntary retirement, whichever is the earliest, reports The Times of India.

Around 177 employees including 78 contractual and 99 regular are associated with the mill. The finance department had recently rejected the proposal to extend the scheme for two years.

Since 2019 the factory has stopped operations and the state government supported the factory under the financial assistance to the Sanjivani Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana scheme for three years from 2020-21 to 2022-23.

The director of agriculture Nevil Alphonso issued an order to the sugar mill management to lay off the staff immediately as the government cannot continue providing financial assistance to the workers.

Now the government has extended the scheme for six months and the grant-in-aim will be used to pay the salaries of the employees.
