Punjab: Pratap Singh Bajwa raises sugarcane arrears issue

Chandigarh: State government should direct sugar mills to immediately clear pending can use of sugarcane farmers worth rupees 800 crore, said Pratap Singh Bajwa, leader of the opposition in Punjab Vidhan Sabha and Congress MLA, reports Indian Express.

In a written statement on Thursday, he said, “I had asked the government about the pending cane dues of farmers on March 22 but have not received any response from the government yet.”

“The sugar mills in the state have not paid cane farmers since February and farmers have launched several agitations for their demand. They had also launched rail roko agitation on February 27. The government has not responded to their agitation yet,” he further added.

“More than one month has passed since the AAP formed government in Punjab but not a single step has been taken to address the issues of sugarcane farmers. The government should realise the gravity of the situation and take immediate steps to address the issue,” Bajwa concluded.
