Strict action against those found harassing farmers: Minister

Dehradun: Yatishwaranand, State Minister for Sugarcane Development and Sugar Industries warned the management of government and private sugar mills of stern actions if they are found harassing sugarcane farmers.

He issued the warning during a review meeting of his department at Vidhan Sabha on Tuesday.

The sugar mills that are yet to clear pending cane dues will not be allowed to close their operations till they clear the cane dues of the farmers, he said. A committee consisting of representatives of local administration, farmers, sugarcane committees and the department should be formed in every district to address the local issues of sugarcane farmers and smooth operations of the sugar mills, he said.

According to the news report published in dailypioneer.com, the minister told the officers that the complaints of wrong measurement in weighing sugarcane, transportation problems, procuring sugarcane from other states, dissuading local producers in purchase of cane, irregularities in quality checks, delay in payments, non payment of commission, lack of sanitation in purchase centres and poor infrastructure are common.
