Sufficient sugar in the country to meet local demand: Zimbabwe Sugar Association

There will not be any sugar shortage in the country and Tongaat Hulett can meet local demand for sweetner, said the Zimbabwe Sugar Association.

The sugar mills at Hippo Valley and Triangle in Chiredzi owned by Tongaat have succeeded in producing around 400,000 tonnes of sugar annually as against the local consumption of 300,000 tonnes. The company exports the surplus sugar.

Some reports in the media stated that the country may face a shortage of sugar due to the suspension of production by Tongaat. Dismissing the reports, Zimbabwe Sugar Association president Muchadeyi Masunda issued a statement stating that the country has sufficient stocks of all types of sugar to meet local demand.

“The media reports were misleading and are incorrect. The sugar industry is operating smoothly without any interruptions,” read the statement.

The local sugar industry is committed to producing enough sugar to meet the local demand, he assured.
