Sugar mills hand in glove with government: Sugarcane farmers

Chandigarh: The farmers are awaiting for clearing dues of Rs 5.88 crore from Bhagwanpura sugar mill, Dhuri. As many as 140 farmers are affected due to delay in the payments and they continue their agitation for arrears from the last eight months.

The farmers had started the agitation for clearance of Rs 99.80 crore in February 2019 for the current year and Rs 27 crore from last year.

Avtar Singh Bhullarheri, a farmer, said, “The government is supporting mills although they have not paid our dues. When we threatened to end lives, the mill transferred bills of some of us into our bank accounts.”  The cane growers have accused the state government and sugar mill owners to be hand in glove.

According to the reports, farmers in the region had cultivated sugarcane on 3,462 hectares in Sangrur in 2018-19, and now it is expected to grow on 2,000 hectares this year. The protest over pending arrears has resulted in a reduction in the cane cultivation area.”
