Sugar production continues in Maharashtra, with some sugar mills opting to cease operations. According to the Sugar Commissionerate, as of February 5, 2024, four sugar mills in Maharashtra have closed during the 2023-24 season, compared to five mills at the same time in the previous season.
To elaborate, one sugar mill in the Solapur division, two in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Nagar division, and one in the Nanded division have decided to halt their crushing operations.
This season witnessed the participation of a total of 207 sugar mills, consisting of 103 cooperative and 104 private mills, which collectively crushed approximately 726.53 lakh tons of sugarcane. The state has produced around 704.44 lakh quintals (70.44 lakh tons) of sugar so far this season. The current average sugar recovery in the state stands at 9.7%.
In comparison, during the same period last season, 208 sugar mills were operational, collectively crushing 805.15 lakh tons of sugarcane and producing 786.73 lakh quintals of sugar. The reduction in the number of operational mills this season has impacted the overall sugar production in Maharashtra.
