Sugar mills to woo sugarcane farmers ahead of assembly election

Nipani: Heavy rains and floods in Pune, Sangli, Satara, Solapur, and Kolhapur have impacted the sugarcane crop drastically. This would ultimately be going to harm sugarcane production in the region. Sugar mills are also likley to face the sugarcane scarcity, which will ultimatly benefit the sugarcane farmers whose crop has survived the flood as they will get good price for their cane.

The Maharashtra assembly election is round the corner and this may result in millers declaring high rates for cane this year. Many sugar mills are owned by politicians, who will be contesting an assembly election this year. So to woo the farmers, they will leave no stone unturned and hike in FRP will be one of the best measures they will go for. The elections and the lack of cane may benefit the sugarcane growers.

The crops on the banks of rivers were underwater for more than two weeks decaying the cane grown in these areas. The farmers residing on the banks of the rivers have demanded to start cane crushing as early as possible so that they can send their remaining cane for crushing.
