Sugar Ministry to hold talks with Fiji Sugar Corporation

The Ministry of Sugar has organised a meeting with Fiji Sugar Corporation in the next few weeks to discuss the forecast for this year’s crushing season.

Yogesh Karan, permanent secretary for the Ministry said, the target is to produce two million tonnes of sugar or more for the miller to break even.

“We are focussing on the areas to increase mechanization in the sector. We are planning to get mechanical planters that can be installed behind a normal tractor while farming. This will reduce the labour cost in the sector,” he said.

“The machines can be used to cut the cane, dig the soil and plant cane. This will aid in reducing the labour demands,” he said.
