Sugar production in Brazil’s key Centre-South region is expected to decline by 4.4% to 40.8 million tonnes in the 2024-25 season, hit by unfavorable weather conditions, industry leader BP Bunge Bioenergia said on Tuesday.
Geovane Consul, chief executive of BP Bunge Bioenergia, attributed the projected drop to lower rainfall compared to the “almost perfect” weather witnessed in the previous season, particularly in the northern growing areas.
Consul also forecast a steeper decline of 9.6 per cent in Centre-South cane production, reaching 598 million tonnes. However, he anticipates a partial mitigation of the impact through a shift in production allocation, with a higher proportion of cane being directed towards sugar production instead of biofuel ethanol.
