Sugar production in Uttar Pradesh declines in 2021-22 season

Uttar Pradesh, the second-largest producer of sugar, has witnessed a drop in sugar production this season.

The lower sugar output is attributed to the diversion of sugar into ethanol production and pest infestation in crop.

The state has also recorded a fall in the sugarcane recovery. The cane recovery in 2018-19 was 11.46 per cent which gradually decreased close to 10.10 per cent in the current season.

As the sugarcane crushing season comes to an end, the mills have cleared 76 per cent of the total cane dues to the farmers.

As per the government data, sugar mills have, as of June 08, paid 26,912.06 crore, which is 76.62 percent of total cane dues. Whereas 102.48 lakh tonnes of sugar has been produced by crushing 1014.76 lakh tonnes of sugarcane.
