Sugarcane crushing season ends in UP: Sugar production, sugarcane crushing and payment updates

The sugarcane crushing season in Uttar Pradesh has concluded with a increase in sugar production. Sugar mills in the state have reported a production of 105.41 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of sugar, a surge from the previous season’s 101.98 LMT. This comes after crushing 1,098.31 LMT of sugarcane, surpassing the previous year’s figure of 1,016.26 LMT.

One of the important priorities of the Uttar Pradesh government has been to expedite the payment of cane dues to farmers. As of June 20, sugar mills have cleared Rs 30,749.23 crore, which accounts for 80.89 per cent of the total dues owed to cane farmers.

Under the current government’s tenure, consistent efforts have been made to address the issue of pending cane dues. The mills have cleared Rs 35,154.56 crore during the 2021-22 season, Rs 33,009.78 crore in the 2020-21 season, Rs 35,898.85 crore in the 2019-20 season, Rs 33,048.06 crore in the 2018-19 season and Rs 35,444.06 crore in 2017-18 season. Taking into account Rs 10,666.69 crore of previous seasons, the mills have so far cleared Rs 2,10,537.97 crore in current government’s regime.
