Sugarcane Farmer Stage Sholay-Style Protest Because Of Unpaid Dues

Shamli (Uttar Pradesh): Farmers across India are agitating due to non-payment of sugarcane arrears. A farmer from Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, did protest dramatically. Taking a cue from the memorable scene of movie Sholay, he climbed on the top of a water tank to protest and warned of committing suicide from there.

According to the report published in Patrika.com, farmer climbed on top of the water tank to demand his pending sugarcane payment.

When asked why did he climb on the water tank, a farmer said, “Sugarcane mill has not paid my pending payment, and already I owe a debt on me. To press my demand, I climbed on the water tank.”

The sugarcane farmers in Shamli district say they have been denied dues in crores including amount from the previous season, by mill authorities. The rule mandates that cane amount should be deposited to the farmers’ bank accounts within 14 days after the sugarcane harvest is handed over to the factory owners.

A few days ago, a case was registered against the management of a sugar mill in Shamli district for not paying sugarcane payment dues. Factory owners have expressed helplessness in paying the arrears owing to the fall in the price of sugar in the domestic market.
